Trip to a warmer place

ADELAIDE TO MERRITON---MERRITON to ROXBY DOWNS

16/07/07

After spending Saturday night sleeping at Grant and Beks we went back home and finished the final cleaning of the house and packing of the car and van.

Denise Riley called so was able to “off load” the extra stuff from the fridge onto her. (Willingly).

We called at Andres on way out and spent some time with them and Grant and Bek and the girls.

Finally got away at 1530 after nearly a few tears, from the girls of course.

The weather was clearing as we went north and we stopped at a bush camp by the Broughton River at Merriton.

Backed into the bushes and was totally concealed from both roads. Di was still very nervous though!

Very cold but we slept in the double bed.

As we arrived in semi dark we did not realise how close to the road we were so was a bit noisy til later in the night, but slept well.

Got up about 7 and went for a walk to the river and old bridge1878.

Left there about 0830 with totally clear skies.

Arrived at Port Augusta and filled with fuel at 133 cents and took 65 lts. (Think she might be a bit thirsty).

Did some shopping at Woolworths and spoke to a bloke in car park who was looking at the outboard bracket. He said he and three mates had done the Gibb River Road and they did NOT have a boat! Big mistake.

Had lunch at Range View road stop and went onto Woomera.

Asked if they knew Ronnie Daniels - they knew Mopsey but not Ronnie! Called at the old detention centre where he works (last 7 years with last 3 as caretaker).Spent some time with him and he gave us a guided tour of the facility or what is left. It is totally gutted with nothing left but a big perimeter fence some dilapidated huts and a pile of used mattresses you couldn’t jump over.

It is now Defence Property so was not able to take photos.

He gave me a good ammo box so will put it up top.

On way to Roxby we saw some very large lakes of water (Saw on telly recently that the locals are water skiing!). Also large areas of Sturt pea.

Booked into Myall Carapark and got a nice site with good clean facilities for $23.

Went into town and saw staff at Lin Andrews (Ali and Sharron) and made arrangements to inspect Pine Cres tomorrow at 1000.Weather at Roxby fine and warm with temp about 18⁰ with a blustery cool change due for Adelaide tomorrow.
